Lessons in stupidity
Three stunning new works of ‘penguin public art’ have gone on display in a Liverpool fashion hub - ahead of this week’s eagerly anticipated Go Penguins internet charity auction.
Based in the city’s Metquarter, Quercus, Noah’s Ark and Garden Bird have never been seen before by the public and are among the most intricate and desirable designs in the auction.
Sally-Ann Wilkinson, Director of Wild in Art said: “I’m thrilled with these new additions to the auction – I had the privilege of watching them being created and was completely mesmerized by every brush stroke. I’m going to be incredibly jealous of whoever is lucky enough to take these three penguins home; it would be an absolute joy to look upon them every day.”
Quercus by Sara Jane Richards, Noah’s Ark by Anna Benson and Garden Bird by Mary Lundquist will be delighting visitors to the Metquarter until Tuesday 2 February before making their way to St George’s Hall for the two-day People’s Preview on Wednesday and Thursday, February 3 - 4.
Councillor Mike Storey, Lord Mayor of Liverpool, said: ‘’There is a huge amount of anticipation and excitement building for the People’s Preview and the online auction and these three new penguins are a fabulous boost to the event. St George’s Hall will definitely be the place to be next week and I’m sure the penguins will be given the send off they deserve and leave a great legacy for many deserving causes.’’
Enquiries have been flooding in about the Go Penguins Internet auction which will take place from 9am Wednesday 3 February with lots closing every two minutes from 12 noon on Friday 5 February in numerical order.
Auctioneer James Kersh said: "We are advising potential purchasers to register well in advance and to have a back up list in case they miss out on their first choice. An internet auction can be won in the last second and so good preparation is vital for success".

Celebrities are also getting behind the auction and its charities, including the cast of Hollyoaks and Paul O’Grady.
The TV star and chat show host said: “It’s been a privilege to be involved in this campaign and I was thrilled to see my original design of Owl Ma Penguin brought to ‘life’. Go Penguins has captured people’s imaginations and an army of penguins dotted around Liverpool has proved a huge success and raised a lot of public interest. I hope the Go Penguins auction raises loads of money for the charities and the penguins go to good homes!!”
