Recycle on the go

A new scheme has been launched in Wirral that will make it much easier to recycle on the go. Wirral Council is trialling a new on-street recycling scheme in Heswall, Birkenhead, Liscard and Bromborough.

Shoppers and visitors will now be able to recycle empty drinks cans, drinks bottles, newspapers and magazines when they are out and about, diverting even more waste from landfill.

Recycling figures for 2008/09 show that Wirral residents helped to achieve a recycling rate nearing 37%; this excellent work can now be continued when they are out shopping.

The special litter bins are purpose built with two separate containers. One side of the bin will be for recyclables and the other side of the bin will collect all other litter.

They are the first on-street recycling facilities to be trialled in the borough and complement the successful kerbside recycling scheme already in place to reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill. The bins are much smaller than the large recycling banks and are designed to complement a street setting.

Wirral Cabinet Member for Environment, Councillor Gill Gardiner said, “We have made great achievements in our household recycling scheme, but it is important to continue to expand the service and provide as many opportunities as possible for people to recycle their rubbish.”

“We are really pleased at the positive response from the public, who are already making use of the new on-street bins to recycle.”

Multi Occupancy Recycling will be rolled out to communal properties from May 2009.
