Pedal-powered pictures
FACT will host the UK’s ONLY cycle-powered cinema in a special day-long participatory film screening and event. On 1 August, audiences will be invited to get on specially rigged bicycles and pedal their way to the final credits of a selection of short films.
The Magnificent Revolution’s pedal-powered cinema system uses up to 10 bikes and 20 legs to power 600W of audio-visual equipment for screening films or projections. An interactive feedback system informs the cyclists and the audience about how much power they’re generating. When the energy supply is running low (i.e. people aren’t pedaling hard enough) a LED lighting kicks in and the ambient light changes colour. No pedaling, no film; nice and simple!
The films being screened will be a selection of bicycle-related Super 8 films, co-programmed by FACT and Straight 8 – some of which premiered at Cannes earlier this Summer.
