Maghull pupil walks design competition
Lauren Callaghan (insert age), a pupil at Green Park Community Primary and Nursery School, is celebrating after winning a Merseyside-wide design competition. As part of the TravelWise competition, Merseyside pupils were invited to create a new character that could be used in promotional material to encourage children across the region to walk to school more often.
Judges were highly impressed with Lauren’s “Walk Dog” character, which was chosen from 150 other designs. TravelWise Co-ordinator, Sarah Dewar, who was on the judging panel, said: “The quality of entries we received for the competition was excellent. However, Lauren’s “Walk Dog” really stood out as a fun character, which would have strong appeal to other pupils across Merseyside.
“It was easy to see how “Walk Dog” could be adapted to create a whole range of fun promotional materials for this year’s BIG Walk to School initiative. Lauren is clearly a budding young designer and her family and friends should be proud of her achievement.”
As part of her prize, Lauren won a class trip to the Walker Art Gallery, where they took part in a crafts session and had a special tour of the gallery.
She said: “I love to draw and was really happy when I found out I’d won the TravelWise competition. We had a great day out at the Walker Art Gallery. Now I’m looking forward to seeing “Walk Dog” used in this year’s BIG Walk to School, I hope it will make everyone walk to school!”
This year’s BIG Walk to School, which coincides with Liverpool’s Year of the Environment, aims to create healthier, happier and greener schools by encouraging parents to leave their cars at home. Almost 200 schools encouraged pupils and parents to take part in the BIG Walk to School last year and this year’s BIG Walk to School is to open to all Merseyside schools with a travel plan or that are working towards adopting a school travel plan.
