The Price at the Liverpool Playhouse supports Liverpool’s Year of the Environment 2009
The Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse have pledged support to Liverpool’s Year of the Environment 2009 by inviting Lead Councillor for the initiative, Berni Turner, to the Playhouse’s ‘recyclable’ set.
The Price, the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse’s first in-house production for 2009, tells the tale of two estranged brothers reunited in their late fathers loft as they value their lives as well as the cost of the collected furniture. However the set of Arthur Miller’s classic and searing family drama has generated much interest from public and critics alike. “This production…features an incredible set. Antique furniture looms over and crowds around the stage, dominating the characters as if the past is all around them.” The Metro. Yet the loft crammed full of beautiful, bespoke furniture doesn’t just serve to add to the drama but also forms part of a set that is almost entirely recyclable.
After The Price finishes it’s run at Liverpool on Saturday the production transfers to Nottingham Playhouse and following that almost all the items will return to their original use and original owners. The furniture including an antique armoire wardrobe has been obtained from various sources including from the Playhouse’s stock of props and from dealers and other theatres in the area. Unlike almost any other theatre sets the majority of what you see on stage will return to another use instead of being built and destroyed specifically for each show.
Councillor Berni Turner visited the set at the Liverpool Playhouse on Wednesday 24th February. The city council’s executive member for the environment said: “It’s fantastic news that Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse are supporting this important year by recycling their set.
“The Year of the Environment is all about celebrating how green we are as a region, and at the same time encourage organisations, residents and visitors to work together to tackle the important issue of climate change.”
The almost entirely recyclable set is only part of the Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse commitment to Liverpool’s Year of the Environment 2009. Specific events supporting the scheme will be planned throughout the year as well as an initiative involving all staff to attempt to make the organisation as “green” as possible in interesting ways. The organisation has already pledged to reduce the amount of paper wasted, scripts are now available electronically to staff members. Switching off as many electrical appliances as possible overnight is also being encouraged, as it is these small measures that can have a huge impact on Liverpool’s energy usage as a whole.
