Green King and Queen

Two eco-friendly youngsters are taking centre stage at one of Liverpool's cultural highlights.

Ross Cummins, aged 10, from Fazakerley and Brooke Camps, six, from Cressington will be crowned King and Queen at the head of the Lord Mayor’s Pageant parade on Saturday.

They will join Liverpool’s Lord Mayor Councillor Mike Storey after being nominated for their good work in supporting Liverpool's Year of the Environment.

Councillor Storey said: “Ross and Brooke will be special VIPs for the day. They will be fitted with specially designed royal (green) costumes and will take pride of place in the pageant to lead one of the most colourful processions Liverpool has seen.

'I would like Saturday to be a celebration of Liverpool’s young people and their key role in the city’s Year of the Environment 2009.

''I can't think of a better reward for Ross and Brooke who have done their bit for the city’s environment than to get the royal treatment on Liverpool's biggest civic occasion.''

The pageant will turn the city centre in to a sea of green, as Liverpool’s community groups and young people have worked with professional carnival artists to help make structures, props and costumes that celebrate themes of the environment.

Starting at 12 noon, the eco-friendly pageant will be a petrol free zone. Cycle-power will lead the way with horse-power, rickshaws, electrically-powered and solar powered vehicles making up the parade – and many people will rely on their own two-feet!

And there is a new route: This year’s Lord Mayor’s Pageant travels through Liverpool City Central Business Improvement District (BID), the retail and leisure heart of the city centre. It starts from Pall Mall, Tithebarn Street, Moorfields, Dale Street, Sir Thomas Street, Whitechapel – pedestrian area, Lord Street, Castle Street, Pall Mall.

In support of this fantastic annual event and to welcome our new Lord Mayor, the 650 businesses within the BID have organised additional events for all the family to enjoy.

People can have lots of fun creating art from recycled Liverpool Echos, shopping bags and other items at the Art Action Stations outside the Metquarter and in Williamson Square.

St Johns Shopping Centre, Metquarter, Queen Square and Lewis’s have also arranged their own fabulous free events to encourage visitors to stay in the retail and leisure heart of the city centre following the Lord Mayor’s Pageant.

After the pageant parade there will be activities throughout the city centre from 1.30pm - 4.30pm with pageant participants performing at Church Street and Liverpool One. There will also be eco-friendly workshops at Williamson Square and Met Quarter, or you can feed the gorillas at St Johns Shopping Centre!
