Green Business Ambassadors

The first steps towards a greener Liverpool were taken last week, with Liverpool Chamber promoting the Green Ambassadors programme, a key part of the 2009 Year of The Environment.

Liverpool City Council’s executive member for the environment, Cllr Berni Turner officially invited businesses and organisations from across the region to apply to become ‘green ambassadors’. The announcement was made at a Liverpool Chamber of Commerce networking event at Lookers Honda, where the car manufacturer’s brand new eco friendly family hybrid – the Insight, was launched.

Maresa Molloy Head of Policy at Liverpool Chamber of Commerce said: “I would urge businesses in the city to visit the Ourcityourplanet.org.uk website where they will find information on how to be a green business ambassador and more importantly information on how to make a green business pledge.

Cllr Turner said: “I’m proud to announce the launch of the Year of the Environment. This year is about celebrating how green the Liverpool city region is and at the same time encouraging residents, businesses and visitors to look at ways in which we can all work together to tackle important issues such as climate change and reducing our carbon footprint. We aim to take Liverpool a step closer to becoming a truly green and sustainable city.”

The Chamber aims to see 200 businesses make a commitment this year and it is encouraging people to be as creative as possible with their pledge, which can be anything from writing an environmental policy to planting a roof garden.

Maresa continued: All we ask is that you let us know what you’re doing and how you get on and you can log all this on the ourcityourplanet website. Liverpool Chamber of Commerce is working in partnership with Groundwork Merseyside and Liverpool Vision to put a practical programme of information and support together for the Year of the Environment.

We aim to give Liverpool businesses ‘the green edge’ through a range of initiatives and support. All of the city’s business and organisations should be looking to improve their environmental performance.”
