Go Penguins has designs on you
This winter, the streets and squares of Liverpool are set to be transformed into an Antarctic winter wonderland when flocks of penguins will arrive in the city.
As part of the Year of the Environment, Wild in Art, the team who brought the city Go Superlambananas! presents Go Penguins, an all-new mass-participation art experience for the Christmas season, commissioned by Liverpool City Council.
Many businesses are already onboard and this Thursday sponsors will have a chance to team up with artists for the first time and pick out their favourite designs which will be transformed into their very own penguin.
Every one of these feathered creatures will be unique, adorned with a blast of colour and fired with the imagination that made its sister event Go Superlambananas! one of the biggest hits of the European Capital of Culture year.
During Thursday's event, Liverpool-based artist and illustrator Philip Marsden will provide a live art experience. Philip creates limited edition comic books and prints and his work has been exhibited nationally.
Organisers from Wild in Art have been inundated with over 500 designs of the highest quality from artists from the region. Artists, schools and community groups have been invited to submit their designs for these unique 3D canvases and those received include traditional and new media, sound and video, poetry and photography.
Sally Ann Wilkinson, Wild in Art’s director, explains: “We are absolutely thrilled and overwhelmed with the designs which have been flooding in to Wild in Art HQ over the past few weeks. These amazing creations provide a showcase for the very best of the region’s creative talent.”
Councillor Warren Bradley, Leader of Liverpool City Council added, ''I'm delighted Go Penguins has attracted so much interest from the business and artistic communities – in fact at this stage more so than Go Superlamabanas had, which is an amazing legacy of how capital of culture has whetted appetites. It's also a great boost for the Winters Trail and all the exciting plans we have in store to make this Christmas such a special one.''
Later this month, flocks of “mini-penguins” will soon be descending on schools around the city ready to be designed by children.
In total more than 100 penguins will be hitting the streets and going on parade for “A Winter’s Trail” from mid-November.
