Get hooked on fishing!

Something fishy is going on in Calderstones Park.

‘A Cast in the Park’ gives young and old the chance to get to grips with the art of fishing and is part of a packed fortnight of half term events taking place in green spaces throughout Liverpool.

The 30-minute demonstrations let people find out more about the sport of angling, how to fish responsibly and everyone taking part will have the opportunity to catch some of the Tench, Carp, Roach and Perch that live in Calderstones lake.

Liverpool city council’s assistant executive member for the environment, Councillor Phil Moffatt, said: “This is a fantastic event and a perfect day out for the family.  You can enjoy the taster sessions and stay in the park and have a picnic.

“The great thing is that not only do you learn about fishing in a fun way from a group of experts, but it also gets across the serious message about responsible angling and how important it is for us to make sure Liverpool has healthy fish stocks.

“A Cast in the Park is just one of many green events being organised over half term to encourage families to get out into their local parks and gardens.  And it would be great to see that as part of Liverpool’s Year of the Environment more people than ever are encouraged to get out and make the most of their local green space.”

The taster sessions will run on Tuesday 26 and Wednesday 27 May from 10am to 3pm, and to take part, just register by calling the Ranger Service on 0151 233 3007 or you can register on the day at the lake.

Children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult and a completed consent form will be requires to take part in the sessions.

Experienced coaches will be on hand to give tips and answer any questions people may have about the sport and anglers can also renew or register for a Liverpool Angler’s Card.

The event is organised by the city council and the Get Hooked on Fishing charity, working together in the city’s parks and green spaces to encourage people to take up fishing.  Both organisations promote the activity as a way of reducing anti-social behaviour.

Approximately 2,000 people in Liverpool are registered on Liverpool’s Angler’s Card database and fishing is one of the country’s biggest participation activities.

Registration is free and must be renewed annually – all that is needed is proof of identity and a current rod licence.

To register people must agree to the terms of the code of conduct and complete a form which can be obtained from Liverpool Direct on 0151 233 3001 or from www.liverpool.gov.uk/parks.   The completed forms need to be taken to any One Stop Shop or Walton Hall Park Leisure Centre along with two forms of identification such as a driver’s licence, passport or current utility bill.
