Gardening guru gives tips to tots

A group of Liverpool four year-olds will be getting some top green fingered tips from a TV expert today.

Youngsters at East Prescot Road Nursery School are taking part in a special hour-long event on the benefits of gardening and looking after the environment.

Horticulturalist Christine Walkden, BBC’s The One Show’s gardening expert, will be giving some top tips on how to look after your garden and how to become a dab hand at growing fruit and vegetables.

Liverpool city council’s executive member for the environment, Councillor Berni Turner, said: “This is a fantastic event and it’s a real coup that a well-known gardener such as Christine has taken time to come and talk about her experiences and give out some green advice.

“It is aimed at children and their families, as looking after a garden or growing fruit and vegetables is a wonderful way to spend time together and is really satisfying when you can see the results of all the hard work you’ve invested.

“It’s yet another brilliant example of how schools and local communities are getting involved in Liverpool’s Year of the Environment, and I’m looking forward to getting some top tips on how to make my home-grown peppers perfect!”

The children will give Christine and Councillor Turner a tour of their flourishing school garden where they’re growing peas, potatoes, sweet corn, peppers and apples, which will be used in the youngster’s snacks.

There will also be some green-themed story-telling and a nature trail for the youngsters which teaches them all about the plants and wildlife that can be found in the garden.

Headteacher, Louise Benson, said: “East Prescot Nursery’s grounds reflect our dreams for our children and I’m looking forward to all our families and friends taking part as it’s going to be a wonderful event.

“Our children are always uppermost in the mind and heart of our school and this has been recognised by successive 'outstanding' OFSTED reports.”

The event has been organised by the school as part of Liverpool’s Year of the Environment and National Family Week.

The Nursery received an ‘outstanding’ OFSTED report in December 2008.  This is the third time the school has received top marks.
