Envi-Romantics go green with love this Valentines day
Waste officers are helping Merseyside lovers get in the mood for Valentine’s Day – the green way.
Officials at Merseyside Waste Disposal Authority (MWDA) are asking local people to declare their love for the region and have come up with a dozen ‘Envi-romantic’ tips – from buying unique presents to handy eco-friendly ideas.
Tips include recycling your Valentine’s card, avoiding excessive and un-recyclable packaging on gifts and dining by candle light to add extra romance.
Carl Beer, Director of MWDA, said: “Valentine’s Day is an excellent opportunity for Merseyside couples to do something positive for their environment.
“Whilst people will be showering their loved ones with gifts we’d also ask them to show their love for the world we live in!”
MWDA’s ‘Enviromantic’ Tips:
Recycle Valentine’s card(s) via your local Household Waste Recycling Centre (call Tel: 0151 255 144 for your nearest Centre) or use your council’s kerbside cardboard collection services
Resist from buying over-packaged gifts
Look for charity cards, where you know the profits are going to a good cause
Buy a card from a local craft market, especially from designers who use recycled materials
Ask your local florist to wrap flowers in recycled paper (remembering to turn your bouquet into compost afterwards)
Avoid packaging altogether by naming a star after your loved one or sponsor an animal at a local zoo
Buy jewellery made from recycled products
Recycle empty champagne or wine bottles
Save on wrapping and make your own chocolates
Buy an acre of rainforest for your loved one
Alternatively, have a tree planted locally on behalf of your other half
Send a special Valentine’s e-card or text message
Ahead of the official launch of the Year of the Environment on Valentine’s Day, Liverpool City Council is asking for ambassadors from across Merseyside representing businesses, schools and communities to come forward and shout about all the green things they do, and to tell them if they're doing anything extra special in 2009 to mark the city's special environmental year.
