Crackdown on teen drinking
A crackdown on teenagers drinking alcohol forms part of Liverpool’s latest Respect week of action.
The city council is working with Merseyside Police in the County ward -which incorporates Walton - from Monday 14 September to warn local youngsters of the consequences of getting drunk and leaving themselves vulnerable.
They will be given leaflets and booklets which have been produced for the Pssst! Be Alcohol Aware campaign run by Liverpool PCT (Primary Care Trust) in partnership with Citysafe, Liverpool’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership.
There will also be a series of activities on Friday and Saturday evenings for young people for three weekends after the week of action.
And Trading Standards officers will also be carrying out test purchases to make sure shops and off licences are not selling alcohol and cigarettes to under age youngsters.
The work forms part of a week of comprehensive activities to improve life for the local community.
As well as cracking down on crime and grime, there is also a focus on getting fit, with a series of walks and exercise classes.
The city council’s executive member for safer, stronger communities, Councillor Marilyn Fielding, will officially launch the week on Monday 14 September, when she tries out ‘green’ gym equipment which has been fitted in Walton Hall Park next to Walton Lifestyles fitness centre.
Councillor Fielding said: “This week of action is designed to make a real and visible difference to the area, and get people involved in activities taking place locally.
“By bringing together all of the different types of organisations we are able to make it a better place to live. Our Respect weeks of action are improving areas right across Liverpool.”
Other events taking place include high visibility police patrols, home fire safety checks and job advice sessions.
Councillor Berni Turner, executive member for the environment, said: “We want to make the area sparkle and will be making a real effort to clean up graffiti and tidy up eyesores.”
The week will culminate in an information fair and family fun day on Saturday 19 September in the old school building on Bedford Road in Walton. It will include a range of activities for the whole family.
