City's floral delights on display

Woolton is blooming and Gateacre is looking great.

The two areas are set to wow North West in Bloom judges with their most colourful and creative horticultural delights ever.

Organisers have promised a visual spectacular to try and guarantee being crowned champions in 2009 - the city’s Year of the Environment.

Joint chair of Woolton in Bloom, Councillor Barbara Mace, said: “Woolton’s greatest asset is its community spirit. Members of Woolton in Bloom finance and organise spectacular floral displays and sustainable environmental improvements, which include permanent planting and wildlife habitats.  Local school children also play their part by taking part in litter picks and planting wildflowers and bulbs.

“Woolton is a thriving village, but Woolton in Bloom has helped it achieve a number of long-term improvements. Our flowers and planting displays now attract visitors and help boost the local economy. We also attract gardeners and community organisers from far and wide.”

The theme of this year’s competition is roots and includes a number of striking new flowerbeds and dozens of immaculately maintained planters and hanging baskets providing lavish colour in wonderful settings. A major feature is an edible flowerbed on the top of Kings Drive created by pupils from Woolton Primary.

Liverpool’s Lord Mayor Councillor Mike Storey, who will be welcoming the judges, said: “Woolton and Gateacre both have a great community spirit and this is reflected in their floral displays. Residents have really taken to the idea and are making sure their streets are as pleasant as they possibly can be. There can be no better way to brighten up parts of our city than with beautifully maintained planting. If they do manage to win an award it will be a tremendous accolade for the city.”

Woolton has won the Best Large Village in the North West for the last five years and last year won Gold at the national Britain in Bloom awards – the only entry from the North West to do so. Gateacre Village has been runner up and second runner up in the Small Village category.
