Chamber Pioneers Green Business Scheme
Liverpool Chamber of Commerce is to become the first green ambassador for business, as part of Liverpool’s Year of the Environment 2009.
The Year of the Environment 2009 is the biggest green celebration ever seen in the north west – and the first legacy year of European Capital of Culture 2008.
As the first green ambassador for business, Liverpool Chamber of Commerce will work alongside Liverpool city council and a huge number of other organisations across the region on a range of exciting initiatives aimed at making Merseyside truly green and sustainable.
The business ambassador programme will see the Chamber of Commerce and other companies and organisations on Merseyside work to examine their environmental impact, with the aim of cutting carbon emissions and waste products.
This will be achieved through business energy audits and evaluations, staff travel plans, reviewed environmental policies, staff training and improved recycling and reduced waste output.
Maresa Molloy, head of policy at the Chamber said:
“Some may argue that in these tough economic conditions businesses will have more pressing concerns than reviewing their environmental credentials. However the climate change agenda is not one that is going to disappear. The last six months have seen a seismic shift in the importance of good social and environmental performance to our public sector buyers and as the government exerts pressure to reduce carbon emissions the effects will trickle down to even the smallest of businesses.”
“The Chamber has already committed to the Liverpool Climate Change Action Plan, measured our carbon footprint and trained two members of staff in environmental management. Next, we hope to achieve an environmental standard and adopt a company travel plan.”
